Direct Primary Care as an Employee Benefit: How Employers Add DPC
A direct primary care membership gives your people a doctor who answers the phone, same-day appointments and longer visits, at a flat monthly price per employee. It works alongside the coverage you already have, or with a leaner plan that costs less.
Ways an employer can use DPC
- Add a DPC membership alongside an existing group health plan.
- Pair DPC with a higher-deductible group health plan and fund the membership from the premium savings.
- Pair DPC with a level-funded or other alternative employer health strategy.
- Pay all or part of employees' DPC membership fees.
- Allow spouses and dependents to join.
- Offer DPC as a stand-alone employer-paid benefit even when the business does not sponsor major medical coverage.
What employers get out of it
- Faster access to primary care, with same-day or next-day appointments.
- Longer appointments, so problems get handled in one visit.
- Fewer urgent care and emergency room visits for routine needs.
- Less time away from work.
- More predictable primary care costs.
- Better management of chronic conditions.
- Greater employee satisfaction, and real access for employees on high-deductible plans.

Questions employers ask
Can an employer offer direct primary care instead of health insurance?
An employer can pay for DPC memberships as a stand-alone benefit even when it does not sponsor major medical coverage, but a membership is not health insurance and does not count as minimum essential coverage. Employees still need protection for hospital care, surgery, specialists, emergency care and major prescriptions, and an employer with 50 or more full-time employees still has its own coverage obligations.
How does DPC pair with a group health plan?
Most often the employer keeps a group plan for the big risks and adds a DPC membership for everyday care, or moves to a higher-deductible or level-funded plan and uses the premium savings to fund the membership. Employees get same-day access and longer visits, and the group plan sees fewer urgent care and emergency room claims for routine needs.
What does a DPC membership cost an employer?
Northeast Florida practices that publish employer pricing charge roughly $60 to $109 per employee per month, usually from four or five employees. 10 listed practices sell employer plans; each listing shows its published rate.
Can spouses and dependents join?
Yes at most practices, either on the employer plan or as an add-on the employee pays. Several practices publish child and family rates alongside the employer rate.
